Teen Success helps teen mothers to be successful by supporting them to finish high school without having a second child as a teen. Through Teen Success teen mothers develop concrete goals and plans for their future. This program was made possible by a grant from Teen Success, Inc.
Through weekly support groups, teen mothers receive professional guidance and develop trusting, supportive relationships with their peers, which together inspire and empower them to reach their potential. Each group consists of 12-14 first-time teen mothers who meet once a week throughout the year to learn important skills, discuss what is going on in their lives, set goals, and gain access to information and resources that will help them reach their goals. The group dynamic is a key element of the success of the program. Trusting, supportive relationships are formed that reinforce positive life steps and help guide members back on track when necessary.
The program uses a codified model in which each group has the following key characteristics:
- Group sessions cover a set of core program topics, with emphasis on completing high school, family planning, goal planning, and life skills. Other topics include healthy relationships, parenting, and nutrition.
- Meetings are held weekly, at least 48 weeks per year
- Group sessions are led by two professional co-facilitators
- Child care is provided during each meeting in a separate room
- Members are given a $10 stipend for attending group
- Each group has a “linked clinic” which offers reproductive health services
- A college scholarship program is available to qualified members
TTSE will be starting 3 groups in January, 2012. If you are interested in learning more about Teen Success, please contact Brigitte Sanchez, Teen Success Program Coordinator at:
