Teacher Training Program

The Comprehensive Sexuality Education and HIV/AIDS Prevention Act (Ed Codes 51930-51939), states that if your school provides sexuality education, it must be comprehensive sexuality education and be provided by TRAINED TEACHERS.

TTSE provides comprehensive sexuality interactive trainings for teachers and health professionals working with youth ages 9-18. The goal of our trainings is to increase knowledge, skills and comfort to those teaching comprehensive sexuality education to students of different ages. We also strive to promote medically accurate, age-appropriate information. These training cover best practices in teen pregnancy and STD prevention; focusing on CA Education Code (51930-51939) and the newly adopted Health Education Content Standards for California Public Schools, within the Growth, Development, and Sexual Health area. Continuing Education Units available.

In-Service Trainings

Individual School Districts and agencies throughout the Bay Area can request a training for adult and peer educators which can be tailored to meet specific needs. We require at least 10 and no more than 30 participants per training.

Fees for In-Service Trainings

* One half day training (3-4 hours) is $850.
* One full day training (6-8 hours) is $1,500.

Two full day trainings (covering all topics included in our Open-Enrollment Trainings) is $3,000.

Trainings include one – two trainers, training materials, a copy of the Teen Talk Curriculum and travel expenses within the Bay Area counties of San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Francisco and Alameda.

For trainings outside of these Bay Area counties, additional charges will be made to cover travel/hotel if needed.

Trainings can be tailored to meet individual needs.

Open-Enrollment Trainings

TPPCSMC offers two to four open-enrollment trainings a year for middle/highs school educators and youth servicing professionals in San Mateo County. This interactive and fun training will cover the areas required by the California education codes. Participants will learn updated information on this subject, as well as activities they can take back to your community. Basic and advanced information is included.

Receive a Continuing Education Unit

This interactive and fun training will cover the areas required by the new sexuality education policy. You will learn updated information on this subject, as well as activities you can take back to your community. Ideal for middle school and high school teachers, and community/health educators.

*must attend both days to receive CE unit.

Participants will receive an electronic copy of the Teen Talk curriculum.

Instructional Objectives

The educational objectives will cover: recent changes to education code (Ed Code 51930-51919), birth control updates, sexually transmitted disease overview, recognizing similarities between adolescents and adults, stages of psychosexual and social development, values clarification in sexuality, and gender role stereotyping.

Instructional Objectives focused on individual participant learning:

• Participants will develop an understanding of the scope and range of sexuality issues that can and should be covered in a Comprehensive Sexuality Education Program.
• Participants will learn and practice basic teaching techniques that have been used extensively in teaching sexuality.
• Participants will acknowledge and understand the similarities between themselves and their teenage students. Participants will recognize the obstacles that teens encounter and empathize with the barriers that adolescents face in society, such as ageism.
• Participants will identify concerns and needs that adolescents face during the different stages of psychosocial and sexual development.
• To help participants learn interactive teaching strategies based on accurate, updated information about contraception.
• To help participants present student use of contraception as a part of an ongoing responsible, safe and healthy relationship.
• To help participants update their information about sexually transmitted diseases and learn interactive teaching strategies to address infections and risk reduction.
• Participants will be able to explore how the media influences attitudes and values about sexuality.
• Participants will work to clarify their own values about issues in sexuality that may have an impact upon how they teach and how comfortable they feel with certain information.
• Participants will learn an activity that will help students clarify their own values about sexuality.
• Participants will be able to identify how gender role stereotyping can affect self-esteem and body image.
• Participants will be able to identify different types of abuse.
• Participants will clarify their values about what is and what is not relationship abuse.
• Participants will be able to discuss issues regarding sexual orientation.
• Participants will understand the recent changes in Education Code, relevant to sexuality education: Comprehensive Sexuality Education and HIV/AIDS Act (Ed Code 51930-51919).
• Participants will reflect upon their learning in the workshop and will brainstorm strategies to apply what they learned in their own classrooms.
